Building Interreligious Solidarity

A Global Student Conference

Monday, September 19, 2022
11:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. EDT
Location: Copley Hall Copley Formal Lounge Map

At a time of deep global divisions, we must find new ways to bring people together across religious, national, racial, and political lines for the common good. Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed Al-Tayeb, two of the world’s leading spiritual figures, underscored this imperative in a joint Document on Human Fraternity signed in Abu Dhabi in 2019. The United Nations has designated February 4, the document’s anniversary, the International Day of Human Fraternity.

In order to give voice to young global citizens committed to a more inclusive future, this conference brought diverse students together to discuss how to build on the document and its promise within university communities. After a plenary session outlining the history and content of the document, student-led breakout groups diagnosed obstacles to inclusive campus communities and developed concrete proposals for change that might be implemented within and across universities around the world.

This event was co-sponsored by the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, the Muslim Council of Elders, and the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs at Georgetown University.
